Tour overview Etna Cable Car + 4x4

This private tour offers the most comfortable route to the base of Etna's summit craters, combining the cable car and 4x4 vehicle from the south side with a guided hike to 3,000 metres. Starting from Rifugio Sapienza, you ascend effortlessly to 2,900m before a manageable one-hour hike brings you to the base of the active summit craters with panoramic views of the volcanic landscape.

Your dedicated volcanological guide provides exclusive attention as you explore the summit area, explaining the geological processes, pointing out recent lava flows, and ensuring your safety at all times. Safety helmets are provided for the crater approach.

This is the ideal choice for small groups and families who want a private, personalised volcano experience without the physical demands of the full summit trek. The guide fee covers up to 4 people, making it excellent value for couples or small groups. Note that cable car and 4x4 tickets (€82 per person) are purchased separately on site.

Quick FAQ for this tour

What is the total cost for the Etna Cable Car + 4x4 tour?

The guide fee is €250 fixed for a group of up to 4 people. On top of that, each participant pays €82 for the cable car and 4x4 ticket, purchased separately on site at Rifugio Sapienza. So for example, a couple pays €250 + (2 × €82) = €414 total.

Why is this tour on the south side instead of the north?

The south side (Rifugio Sapienza) has the cable car and 4x4 infrastructure that takes you from 1,910m to 2,900m with minimal effort. This makes it the most comfortable route to reach near-summit altitude. The north side requires either a long trek or a separate 4x4 service.

How difficult is the hike from 2,900m to 3,000m?

The hike is about 1 km round trip and takes roughly one hour. It is rated easy to moderate — the altitude is the main challenge, not the terrain. Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can manage it. Safety helmets are provided for the crater approach.

Can more than 4 people join this tour?

The standard guide fee of €250 covers up to 4 participants. For groups of 5 or more, contact us for a custom quote. Additional costs may apply for the extra guiding time and logistics.

Do I need to book the cable car ticket in advance?

No, cable car and 4x4 tickets (€82 per person) are purchased on site at the Rifugio Sapienza ticket office on the day of your tour. Your guide will assist you with the purchase. However, in peak summer months (July-August), arriving early is recommended to avoid long queues.

Vincenzo is a wonderful guide. We booked him for a family (girls 9 and 12) day trip. He picked us up at the harbour and took us to the top of the volcano via bus, gondola and truck. We got to see and touch snow, feel the heat near the craters and hike in the moonlike landscape. On our way back down we even visited a volcanic cave (with helmets and flashlights). An awesome finale to an unforgettable day.

Etna is mesmerising and wonderful and Vincenzo is the best possible guide for experiencing this utterly beautiful mountain. He is so friendly, knowledgable and passionate about this region and very clear in explaining the natural process. Everyone in our group of 7 thought his personality, knowledge and guidance were a 10/10. Cannot recommend him more highly!

Amazing guide! Very kind and caring, gave us jackets and boots because we went to the top of the Etna and it was a cold day. He led us on paths where other groups didn't go and gave us some freedom that only comes in small groups that he is leading. I loved that personal touch and would recommend Vincenzo anytime with great confidence.

Quite simply, one of the best hikes that we have ever had! Vincenzo explained very clearly what our hike options were based on the weather, was very well prepared, and gave many insightful and interesting explanations during the hike. Clearly, we would never have had even half the experience without his guidance. Thanks Vincenzo!
