Tour overview Etna Summit Craters Trek
Here is how you reach Mount Etna's summit craters: you go with an authorized guide โ under the ordinances in force, the summit crater zone can only be visited accompanied by one โ and you earn the last 500 metres on foot. This 6-hour trek starts at Piano Provenzana (1,800m) on the quieter north side. A 4x4 bus lifts you to 2,900m, then we climb together to the summit crater zone at around 3,300m, always within the maximum altitude allowed by the current ordinance. The โฌ120 per person price includes the volcanological guide, the 4x4 round trip and safety helmets.
What is the climb to the summit craters like?
From Piano delle Concazze at 2,900m the ascent takes about 2 hours on loose volcanic terrain โ ash, scoria and recent lava, more tiring than a normal mountain trail. Along the way you pass steaming fumaroles and lava flows from the latest eruptions. At the top you stand on the edge of the active summit craters, watching the gas plume rise from one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. On a clear day the view stretches from the Aeolian Islands to the Calabrian coast. After the time at the craters, we descend to 2,900m and the 4x4 brings you back to Piano Provenzana.
How high do you actually get?
I am honest about this with every group: the maximum altitude is not fixed. It follows the ordinances in force and the volcano's activity on the day โ I check the INGV bulletins and the conditions on the mountain every morning and decide the final route accordingly. Most days that means the summit crater zone at around 3,300m; on days of elevated activity it can mean stopping lower. That flexibility is not a defect of the tour, it is the reason you can walk up an active volcano safely.
This trek is for hikers in good physical condition, aged 12 and up. If you want the summit craters but not the effort, look at the cable car + 4x4 option on the south side instead โ this route is the real climb, and reaching the crater rim on your own legs is exactly what makes it unforgettable.

Quick FAQ for this tour
Do I need a guide to reach Etna's summit craters?
Yes. Under the ordinances in force, the summit crater zone of Mount Etna can only be visited with an authorized guide โ whether you arrive on foot, by 4x4 or by cable car. On this trek a volcanological guide leads the group the whole way, and the maximum altitude reached follows the current ordinance and the volcano's activity on the day.
What equipment do I need for the summit craters trek?
Hiking boots with ankle support, warm layers (even in summer it can drop below 5ยฐC at the top), long trousers, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen and a buff to protect nose and mouth from volcanic dust. Bring at least 1.5 litres of water and a packed lunch in your backpack โ there are no facilities at altitude. Safety helmets are provided.
How physically demanding is the Etna Summit Craters Trek?
This trek is rated moderate to intense. You hike from 2,900m to 3,300m on loose volcanic terrain over 6 hours covering 6 km. You need strong physical condition โ it is forbidden for people with heart problems, asthma, high blood pressure, or knee/back issues. Minimum age is 12 years old.
What does the 4x4 transfer cover?
The 4x4 takes you from Piano Provenzana at 1,800m up to 2,900m, saving you over 1,100 metres of elevation gain. The same vehicle picks you up after the descent from the summit craters. The 4x4 transfer is included in the โฌ120 per person price.
Can I see the summit craters year-round?
No. This trek is seasonal and depends on volcanic activity, snow cover, and weather conditions. When the summit area is inaccessible, the guide may adjust the maximum altitude reached. Always check availability before booking.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my trek?
If conditions are unsafe (high winds, poor visibility, volcanic activity), the guide may shorten the route, reduce the maximum altitude, or reschedule the trek. Safety always comes first โ the itinerary is never guaranteed to reach the summit craters.
Is food or water provided during the trek?
No. There are no facilities at altitude, so you must bring your own food and drinks. We recommend at least 1.5 litres of water, energy bars, and a packed lunch. Everything must fit in a backpack you carry yourself.
