What Is the Etna Quad Tour?

This 2-hour tour is a guided ATV adventure on Etna's slopes. You ride your own quad bike (two passengers per quad) following an experienced guide through a mix of terrain: pine and birch forests, solidified lava flows, and volcanic tracks with panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Ionian coast and Etna's summit.

The route includes a stop at a natural lava tunnel — the same type of geological formation explained on the Etna 3000 South tour, where you enter a cave-like structure created by flowing lava. Inside, the temperature drops and you can see the layered lava walls up close. It's a memorable moment that combines adventure with geology.

The Route

The quad tour covers roughly 20 km of mixed terrain. The ride starts from a base on Etna's slopes and climbs through forested areas where endemic Etna plants grow between the lava. As you gain altitude, the trees thin out and the landscape becomes increasingly volcanic — black scoria, solidified lava rivers, and occasional steam vents.

Several stops along the route offer panoramic views. Your guide points out geological features and historical eruption zones. On clear days, you can see the coastline from Taormina to Catania below, with the summit craters smoking above. The combination of riding and sightseeing makes this one of the most fun ways to experience Etna.

Requirements and Tips

A valid driving licence is required for the driver (B or A category). No previous quad experience is necessary — the guide provides a briefing before departure. The passenger seat is open to anyone, including teenagers. Helmets and insurance are included in the price.

Wear long trousers, closed shoes (not sandals), and a jacket. The volcanic dust can be intense during dry conditions, so sunglasses and a buff are recommended. Price: €110 per quad (2 persons). Duration: 2 hours.

Quad vs Jeep: Which to Choose?

Both the quad tour and the Etna 4x4 Jeep Tour are non-hiking alternatives, but they're very different experiences.
