Monti Sartorius: Family Walk on Mount Etna
A gentle, family-friendly circular trail through Etna's birch forest, 1865 lava flows, and volcanic craters. Perfect for children and seniors.

Table of Contents
Not every Etna experience requires a challenging trek. The Monti Sartorius Craters Walk is a gentle 4 km loop on the volcano's quieter north side โ perfect for families with young children, grandparents, and anyone who prefers an easy pace without sacrificing the volcanic experience.
Why Monti Sartorius?
At 1,800 metres altitude, the Monti Sartorius trail offers a landscape that feels like another planet. White-barked birch trees โ the endemic Etna birch (Betula aetnensis) โ grow against a backdrop of jet-black lava. The craters were formed during the 1865 eruption and are now a chain of gentle, grass-covered cones that you can walk around and even peer into.
This is Etna at its most accessible: flat to gently undulating terrain, well-defined paths, and views that stretch to the Ionian coast. It's also quieter than the busy south side at Rifugio Sapienza โ you might have the trail largely to yourselves.
The Trail
The circular route takes about 2.5 hours at a relaxed pace. Your volcanological guide leads you through three distinct environments:
- Birch forest: Dense woodland of Etna's signature birch trees, with dappled light and soft forest floor. In autumn, the foliage turns golden โ one of Etna's most photogenic scenes.
- 1865 lava fields: Solidified lava flows where you can see the slow process of ecological recovery. Pioneer plants like Astragalus siculus cling to the crevices, starting the centuries-long process of soil formation.
- Sartorius craters: A chain of small volcanic cones from the 1865 eruption. Walking along their rims gives you an intimate sense of how eruptions reshape the landscape โ without the altitude or difficulty of the summit.
What Children Love
Children find Monti Sartorius fascinating because it's a real volcano that feels safe and approachable. They can touch lava rock, look into craters, spot lizards sunbathing on warm stones, and hunt for wildflowers growing in impossible places. The guide keeps explanations accessible and engages young curiosity with hands-on observations.
For families staying in the Taormina area, this walk is an easy half-day excursion that leaves time for other activities. And if the adults want something more adventurous, the Etna jeep tour departs from the same area at Piano Provenzana.
Practical Information
The trail starts near Piano Provenzana on Etna's north side, reachable from Linguaglossa (15 minutes by car). Pricing: โฌ200 for a private guide (up to 5 people) โ making it excellent value for families. Duration: 2.5 hours. Difficulty: easy. Children of all ages are welcome; strollers are not suitable (the path is natural terrain).
Bring comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket, water, and snacks. Heavy hiking gear is not necessary for this gentle walk. The north side can be a few degrees cooler than the south, so a fleece layer is recommended even in summer.
